Reflecting the importance we place on our children, this section gauges health, family support, engagement and risk exposure are included. Measures relating to the educational achievement of children and youth are included in the
Education Topic.

Approximately 295,000 children and youth under the age of 20 live in our seven-county region. This age group constitutes 26% of the area's total population. The state of life for our children is best described as one of contrasts. In many ways, our children are better off than those elsewhere in NewYork and in the nation. For example, our area experiences fewer instances of low-weight births, higher rates of prenatal care, and lower rates of childhood poverty and teen pregnancy.

In some measures, our children fare more poorly, such as our higher rate of infant mortality. In the case of children with elevated blood lead levels, our area still rates more poorly than the state, but significant progress has been made (see the "What's Being Done" tab). Unfortunately, in the United States, those who are poor — including their children — experience greater challenges to health and well-being. Since the poor of our region are overwhelmingly concentrated in the City of Rochester, the conditions faced by children within the city are far more challenging. For example, more than 40% of Rochester's children live in poverty, compared with the region-wide total of 17%.
