What does this measure?

The number of public electric vehicle (EV) charging ports.

Why is this important?

A transition to electric vehicles can be a major component of addressing climate change by limiting demand for fossil fuels and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

However, consumer uptake of electric vehicles is limited in part by concerns about ability to recharge them when needed. Currently, EV charging stations are nowhere near as ubiquitous as gas stations. There must be a substantial increase in the number of EV charging stations and ports in order for electric vehicle adoption to become widespread and practical.

How is our region performing?

The number of charging ports has declined in the last year 18% to 165 in 2023. This is down from 201 in 2022. Monroe County had the largest number of ports in 2023 at 123, followed by Ontario with 26 and Livingston with 10. Several regional counties did not have any ports in 2023 despite having some in 2022.

Notes about the data

EV infrastructure has only been consistently tracked in the last few years. Public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and ports are proactively verified every other year, with half of the EV charging stations verified each year.
