What does this measure?

The number of cyclists killed or injured in crashes, expressed as a rate per 10,000 residents.

Why is this important?

Bicycles offer a low-cost, zero-carbon emission mode of transportation. Injuries or fatalities involving cyclists offer insight into how safe streets are for those traveling by bike and can inform measures taken to ensure cyclist safety.

How is our region performing?

In 2022, there were 1.4 injuries or fatalities per 10,000 residents in our region, down from 2.4 in 2012. In our region, the rate was highest in the City of Rochester at 3.2, followed by Seneca County at 2.4, Genesee at 2.3 and Monroe at 1.7. These rates were lower than the state (including NYC) rate of 3.8 but higher than the state (excluding NYC) rate of 1.6.

Rochester's rate has decreased from a recent high of 7.1 in 2013.

Notes about the data

A bicycle crash is a motor vehicle crash in which a bicycle was involved. New York's Vehicle & Traffic Law (VAT) defines a bicycle as "every two or three wheeled device upon which a person or persons may ride, propelled by human power through a belt, a chain or gears, with such wheels in a tandem or tricycle, except that it shall not include such a device having solid tires and intended for use only on a sidewalk by pre-teenage children." Comparable U.S. data were not available.
