Providing Affordable Housing

The Greater Rochester Association of Realtors provides a variety of public services, including up-to-date statistics on home sales for each county.

Group 14621 provides home repair grants and other assistance, including outreach and information on public safety issues, lead hazards and fire safety. Group 14621 also houses a tool lending library for neighborhood residents who are members.

The Housing Council is a nonprofit organization located in Rochester that specializes in comprehensive housing education and counseling. Clients are counseled on issues such as homeownership, obtaining rental property, affordable housing, and foreclosure prevention.

Marketview Heights Association is a HUD approved counseling agency providing home buyer counseling and education for first time home buyers, home ownership counseling and education, and foreclosure prevention services.

NCS Community Development Corporation provides access to decent, safe, and affordable housing through housing development, techical services, and collaborative resources that revitalize and sustain city neighborhoods.

NeighborWorks Rochester is a nonprofit affiliate of the national NeighborWorks network.  The organization provides loans to individuals who might not qualify at a bank, as well as pre-purchase counseling to homebuyers.

North East Area Development, Inc. (NEAD) administers the Emergency Assistance Repair Program (EARP), which is open to homeowners in the southeast area of the City of Rochester who meet income and family size guidelines, and are in need of emergency repairs to the outside of their homes.

Rochester Housing Authority provides rental housing to those in need through several programs: a range of public housing properties; the Section 8 voucher program that assists eligible individuals and families in obtaining market-rate housing in the community; and various support services.

The City of Rochester offers a variety of housing services. One recent initiative is the completion of a citywide housing market study that analyzed all city neighborhoods and established a comprehensive set of housing strategies.

South Wedge Planning Committee encourages a full range of housing opportunities and promotes a diverse, historically significant, and commercially sustainable urban village in the South Wedge neighborhood.

The Greater Rochester Housing Partnership is a nonprofit lender dedicated to providing affordable home ownership in the region. One of the organization's services is the HOME Rochester Program, which provides affordable home listings, financing sources, training services and other information.

Habitat for Humanity engages volunteers to build homes for eligible low income residents. Habitat has units in each of the region's counties. Flower City Habitat for Humanity serves Rochester and Monroe County, and has built more than 160 new homes since 1984. The other regional units are:

The Urban League of Rochester operates a number of affordable rental properties throughout the area in both city and suburban locations.

Ibero-American Action League provides a multitude of services, including first-time homebuyer education in Spanish through the Ibero-American Development Corporation. It also has developed and operated a number of affordable housing properties in the area.

PathStone provides comprehensive services in seven states from its Rochester headquarters. The organization offers a number of services categorized by the type of need.

Action for a Better Community (ABC) offers energy conservation and weatherization assistance to eligible residents.

The Center for Disability Rights provides services to promote independent living and advocates for expanded accessible, affordable and integrated housing options.

Empire Justice Center is a nonprofit law firm that advocates for and assists poor and low-income people with legal issues. The organization's scope includes housing and community development issues.

Healthy Neighborhoods

The Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning works to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in the Greater Rochester region and has been instrumental in driving that movement locally.

RochesterCityLiving.com, a program operated by the Landmark Society, promotes the benefits of living in the city and provides information about specific neighborhoods.

The Rochester Homebuilders Association encourages quality and professionalism among members of the housing construction industry. The organization offers links to resources on a wide range of housing-related topics.

Homelessness and Crisis Housing

Foodlink developed The Homeless and Hunger Guide, a directory of more than 150 Monroe County organizations providing services to the homeless, which can be accessed at 2-1-1/Life Line.
