What does this measure?

The annual per-capita spending for cities, towns, villages, and county within a county, adjusted for inflation.

Why is this important?

Government provides critical services to communities, but the cost to taxpayers can be burdensome and can hinder efforts to attract and retain business.

How is our region performing?

Local government spending per-capita for the region was $3,590 in 2018, similar to the spending in New York State (excluding NYC). In the region, local spending has decreased 1.5% from 2017 but increased 7% from 2000. Spending in each county decreased from 2017, except for Ontario, Orleans, Yates and Seneca which increased 4.4%, 2.8%, 1% and 8.3%, respectively. Spending in 2018 was highest in Wyoming ($4,630) followed by Genesee ($3,700 and Monroe ($3,740). The City of Rochester spent just over $3,120 per capita, a 34% increase from 2000 and about $140 more than in 2017.

Notes about the data

Data are presented in constant 2018 dollars. New York State excludes New York City. Data for this indicator are expected to be released in the fourth quarter.
